On 2 September 2025, the Australian Government announced that the migration planning level for the 2025-26 permanent Migration Program has been set at <\/span>185,000 places<\/b>, consistent with the 2024-25 program settings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Department of Home Affairs, the program continues to prioritise <\/span>the skills stream, <\/b>designed to strengthen Australia\u2019s working-age population, increase labour force participation, and address critical skill shortages, particularly in regional areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of the total 185,000 places, around <\/span>132,200 spots(over 70%)<\/b> are allocated to the <\/span>the Skilled stream, <\/b>aiming to meet labour market needs. <\/span>The Family stream<\/b> about <\/span>52,500 places,<\/b>while <\/span>300 visas<\/b> are reserved for <\/span>Special Eligibility cases.<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Skilled stream continues to target workers with critical skills and qualifications. As part of the transition to the <\/span>National Innovation visa<\/b>, applicants under <\/span>Global Talent<\/b> and <\/span>Distinguished Talent programs <\/b>will be included without disadvantage. Regional and state\/territory nominated visas comprise <\/span>36% of the overall program<\/b> and half of <\/span>the Skilled stream,<\/b> allowing jurisdictions to address their specific labor needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Family stream<\/b> remains an important element of Australia's migration system, supporting family reunions and social cohesion. <\/span>Partner visa<\/b> is the largest category and operates on a demand-driven basis, while <\/span>the Child visa <\/b>program remains set at <\/span>3,000 places allocated<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
