HOW TO APPLY
THE AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL POLICE CHECK

The Australian Federal Police Check (AFP) is an indispensable document in the application for both a permanent residence and temporary residence settlement visa in Australia. Therefore, you are required to have an AFP if you want to live in this country. If you still do not know how to apply an Australian Police Check, the following article of Skill Direct will provide detailed instructions on how to get AFP.​

The first step in the process to get an Australian Federal Police Check is to prepare some documents as shown below. 

Documents must be scanned in clear color in PDF or JPG, or TIF format

One note is that you only need to prepare documents that reach 100 points according to the scale below, do not need to exceed many points because only 100 points are required to be eligible for AFP.

Among the documents in the table above, Skill Direct would like to list some documents with corresponding points that Vietnamese people can easily get as below.

However, you can also choose the documents that you find convenient to prepare.

After you have all the necessary documents that have reached 100 points, start following the instructions below.

After accessing the link, you will see a welcome message from the Australian Federal Police. You just need to scroll to the bottom, tick the box I have read and understood the instructions above. 

Then click Start New Online Application

STEP 2: CHOOSE THE DOCUMENTS PROVIDED

On the second page, please tick the documents that you have prepared as shown below.

Note that there are 2 categories of documents including: Primary documents and Secondary documents, you must provide at least one document in the list of Primary documents.

In this example, we choose 2 types of documents: Foreign Passport (Vietnamese passport) and Australian Driver License. You can choose a passport and other documents that guarantee 100 points that are most convenient for you.

Then, tick the box I have scanned the identity documents specified above that will be loaded to my application. Then click Next.

STEP 3: COMPLETE PERSONAL INFORMATION

On this page, you proceed to fill in your personal information including: Full name, date of birth, email, and purpose of applying for AFP.

Example:

  • Your name in your passport is: Tran Trung Hieu
  • Date of birth: 06/12/1993

Now you proceed to fill in the information as shown below:

Note

In the Purpose of Check section, you must select Code 33 – Immigration/Citizenship – for supply to the Department of Home Affairs

Then click Next.

STEP 4: CHECK THE INFORMATION AGAIN

The system has now recorded your registration information. You should check one last time, if you find that the information is correct, then tick the box By selecting this box you are acknowledging that you have read the above terms and conditions and are consenting to the Australian Federal Police to complete a National Police Check on your behalf below to confirm. 

Then click Next

STEP 5: PROVIDE THE DOCUMENTS THAT YOU HAVE PREPARED

In the Identification Documents section, you need to provide all the documents that you have prepared. By clicking Choose file to select the required documents. Then click Upload files to upload documents.

Next, tick the box I have uploaded 100 points of identification documents and have verified that these are the correct documents.

Then click Next to go to the next step.

STEP 6: CHECK AND CONTINUE PROVIDE INFORMATION

At the Applicant Details page, check the information again. If all is correct then continue to fill in the information below.

Note

  • Country of Birth: In this section, enter the name of that country where you were born.
  • Australian Driver’s License No and Issuing State: If you have a driver’s license, fill in the information, otherwise leave it blank.
  • Have you ever been known by any other name (e.g. different given / middle names, maiden name, previous married name etc): For this section, if you have a different name on your passport, driver’s license, bank card,… then you need to select Yes. If you only use one name on the document, choose No.
  • If you choose No, Then click Next to go to the next step.
  • If you choose Yes, then the Other Names item will appear on the screen. At this point, you need to provide your other commonly used names.

In the Name Type section, there are two options: Former name and Also Known As.

  • Former name: The old name was previously in the papers, but later renamed.
  • Also Known As: For those of you who have an inconsistent name order or have an English name added.

For example, for the name Tran Trung Hieu, you are also known by another name like Hieu Tran. If there are more names, click Add more
Then click Next

STEP 8: PROVIDE RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

In the Current Residential Address section, if you are living outside Australia, in the sentence Do you currently live in Australia?, please choose No.

In the Mailing Address of the Certificate section, tick the box Same as Current Residential Address. If you are outside Australia, but have a friend or acquaintance who can help receive AFP, enter their address here to receive AFP through the post office.

In the Previous Residential Address section, please enter your residential address in the last 10 years.

STEP 9: RECONFIRMED INFORMATION

After checking all the information provided. If all information is correct, tick the two confirmation boxes.

Then click Next

STEP 10: PAYMENT

In the Almost there section, select Pay => Confirm payment to proceed with the payment

After successful payment, the screen will display a window confirming the payment process is completed and the Reference Number information will be displayed. You should take a screenshot to save the Reference Number, in case the system fails.

Then you proceed to check your email, including the spam box to get the invoice. In case you do not receive an invoice, please contact AFP to inquire in the following ways:
