One of the most common questions visa applicants ask is: If my Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) has expired, do I need to get a new one?

The answer doesn't depend solely on the expiry of your PCC. It also depends on your travel history since the certificate was issued.
For visa application purposes, a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) or Penal Clearance Certificate is generally considered valid for 12 months from the date of issue, regardless of the validity period stated by the issuing authority in that country.
Scenario 1: Your PCC is still within 12 months of the issue date
If your PCC is still within its 12-month validity period, returning to the country that issued the certificate does not affect its validity. In other words, your PCC remains acceptable until 12 months have passed from the date it was issued.
Scenario 2: Your PCC has expired
Once your PCC has expired, the key question is whether you have returned to the country that issued the certificate after it expired.
- If you have not returned, you generally do not need to obtain a new PCC. This is because you have not accumulated any additional period of residence or stay in that country, so there is no need to update your criminal record information.
- If you have returned, the length of your stay becomes the deciding factor. If your total time spent in that country exceeds two months (cumulative) after your PCC expired, you will need to provide a new PCC. This ensures that your visa application reflects any changes that may have occurred in your criminal record during that period.
An expired PCC does not automatically mean you need to apply for a new one. The most important factors are whether you returned to the country that issued the PCC after it expired and, if you did, how long you stayed there in total.
